Mahir, Barsha Among Trio Remanded to Jail After Giving Statement in Zubayed Case

Three accused — Mahir, Barsha, and Aila — confessed in court to their involvement in the murder of Jagannath University student Zubayed Hossain. The Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate’s courts recorded their statements under Section 164 before ordering them to jail. Zubayed, a private tutor, was found murdered at a student’s residence in Bangshal on October 19. His brother filed a case, and police later uncovered the crime’s details through Barsha’s message to a fellow student.

On Tuesday (October 21), four separate courts of the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate recorded the statements and testimonies of the accused in the Zubayed murder case. Mahir gave his statement in the court of Mehedi Hasan, Barsha in the court of Masum Mia, and Aila in the court of Jewel Rana. Following the recording of their statements, all three were ordered to be sent to jail.

Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqui confirmed the matter to the media.

Since the accused voluntarily agreed to give their confessional statements, the case’s investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Md. Ashraf Hossain of Bangshal Police Station, submitted a petition in the afternoon to record them. Later, the four courts recorded their confessions under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

Earlier that morning, the victim’s brother, Enayet Hossain Soikat, filed a murder case with Bangshal Police Station in Dhaka.

According to the case statement, the victim, Zubayed Hossain, was a university student who also worked as a private tutor. On October 19, around 4:30 p.m., he went to “Roushan Villa,” Holding No. 15, Nur Box Lane, Ward 31 under Bangshal Police Station, for a tutoring session.

Shocking revelations about the incident later came from the student herself. As stated in the complaint, at approximately 5:48 p.m. that day, the student (Barsha) messaged Zubayed’s university junior, Soikat, on Messenger, saying, “Zubayed Sir has been killed; someone has murdered him.”

At around 7 p.m. that evening, Jagannath University student Md. Kamrul Hasan informed Zubayed’s brother, Enayet, of the incident over the phone. Enayet, along with his brother-in-law Sharif Mohammad, rushed to Roushan Villa at about 8:30 p.m. While climbing from the ground floor, they noticed bloodstains on the stairs and walls. Upon reaching the third floor, they found Zubayed’s blood-soaked body lying face down on the staircase on the eastern side of a room.

After the autopsy, Zubayed was laid to rest on October 20 in his ancestral village at Krishnapur, Cumilla.
